Commissioned for UK comic 2000AD’s ‘Summer Offensive’ relaunch in 1993, Scrotnig was born when art director Steve Cook held up a bottle of Asahi beer in Koh Samui, Thailand, and pointed to the label. “Like this!” he said. The basic angled stroke of the logo was thus used as a starting point for the font, which moved a long way from inception to final design. A bold, and later a condensed version were added to better squeeze longer headlines into the limited space on covers. It was subsequently used by MTV for their on-screen credits.
